The international organisation Oceana, dedicated to the research and protection the oceans of the world, with members in more than 150 countries, will be holding a meeting in Brussels between 9 and 11 May to analyse the current situation of the oceans.
The experts in marine biology and researchers who make up Oceana will be holding discussions with official representatives from the European Union’s Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs. Issues such as destructive fishing methods, the need to protect marine ecosystems, the pollution of the seas and endangered species are still top priorities on Oceana’s agenda for 2006.
Oceana’s international experts meeting in Brussels will include Dr. Daniel Pauly and oceanographer Xavier Pastor.
Daniel Pauly
- Recognised as one of the most outstanding fisheries biologists in the world.
- * An expert in areas relating to the depletion of international fishing-grounds, deep-sea coral reefs and changes to the ecosystems shown by the exhaustion of marine trophic networks.
- The founder of FishBase (www.fishbase.org), a global database on fish containing information on more than 26,000 species which currently receives over 3 million visits a month.
- The creator of “Ecopath”, a computer programme for modelling marine ecosystems which is used all over the world.
- Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, where he currently holds the position of Director of the Fisheries Centre.
- He has worked in Manila in the Philippines at the International Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management.
- He is the author or co-author of more than 500 scientific articles, chapters and contributions and the co-editor of 30 books and reports.
Xavier Pastor
- A renowned marine biologist and researcher in Europe.
- He has taken part in fisheries and environmental research campaigns on board international oceanographic vessels, many of which he was in charge of.
- The instigator and driving force behind legislative advances relating to the protection of natural and marine areas.
- A specialist in Norwegian waters and assessing fish stocks through echo-sounders, a technique he implemented during expeditions in the waters of Norway, Iceland and Newfoundland.
- The founder of Greenpeace Spain and the driver of environmental initiatives in Mediterranean, Latin American and Eastern European countries.
- A frequent speaker at international forums such as the ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea), the GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean) and the CIESM (International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean).
- The author of more than 500 articles disseminating scientific information, as well as various books and scientific publications on fisheries, cetaceans and marine reptiles.
